Changes

What is different between this document and the one it is being compared with.

The list only has anything in it once two documents are linked as a comparison pair. See Comparing first.

What you can do with a row

• Go to it - the page moves to the change, in both documents.
• Comment on it - the change becomes a comment on the reviewed document, in Talk.

Nothing here is written into either file

The differences are painted onto the pages while you look at them. A comparison is a finding on screen, not a mark on the document, so it leaves no trace in either file. What is written is a comment you deliberately make from a change.

Starting a comparison reports what it found in the status line, for example:

compare-a against compare-b - 1 difference(s) marked; 0 touch a number.

and this list then holds one row per difference, reading, for example, three → five. Clicking a row moves the view to the difference; right- clicking offers Comment on This Change, which puts a thread into Talk quoting the new text and naming what it was compared against.

How many differences touch a number is reported separately from the total, because a changed figure is not the same kind of finding as a changed word - a fee, a date, a percentage.

Once a comparison is running, Compare ▸ Next Change and Previous Change become available, and this tab's own tooltip changes from no comparison is running to naming the pair.
